I have the exact opposite happening to me.  /sbin/modinfo shows that it's 0.3.7-f ( there's only one ivtv.ko in /lib/* ) but /var/log/messages says it's still 0.2.0 (rc3j).

I can't use "/sbin/modinfo ivtv" because it's says it's a directory so I've been using /sbin/modinfo /lib/......./ivtv/ivtv.ko.

I've been meaning to ask about this for a while. I'm running 0.3.8, as
evidenced by dmesg and my syslog:

ivtv: version 0.3.8 (snapshot compiled on Wed Aug 31 18:25:47 2005)
loading

But when I run modinfo is says this:
  version:        0.2.0-rc3j

It's always said that for modinfo. I just assumed that the old version
info was tucked away in the code somwhere, but apparently it's not.
Where is modinfo getting the version info from, anyway? I tried grepping
for that string in /etc but didn't find it anywhere.
