Further research has revealed to me that I do not have a /dev/video0, or any else of the sort, and I get the impression that I'm supposed to have them. I don't know if this is related to my firmware problem, but I assume it is. I can't figure out how to fix this; I tried the 'mknod' command listed in one of the wiki articles, but /dev/video0 went away after a reboot and it still doesn't work.
Thanks for the help so far.
