Well i got the binary version 10.6 installed and working, but i still
want to figure out how to roll my own for later.

the spec shows the following requirements:

BuildRequires: XFree86-sdk, XFree86-devel
BuildRequires: ivtv-kernheaders

but when i try to install the XFree packages through Yum i get
conflicts "xorg-x11 conflicts with XFree86-sdk"
so how can i compile the xdriver against the xorg files already on my
machine?

XFree86 was replaced with xorg-x11 in Fedora Core something. The two
projects share the same codebase (xorg is a fork off XFree86), and the
resulting packages are very similar, too.

So when a package XFree86-something is required use xorg-x11-something
instead. That's a golden rule of thumb :)

Many xorg-x11 package provide the old XFree86 entities for backwards
compatibility.

You are certainly on the safe side if you use system-package-config to
install all X11 bits, or use yum groupinstall with some X11 groups.

Thanks for the clarification. I have a better overview now, although i'm still not sure where to point xmkfm. I don't see an "xc" directory anywhere except in the xdriver directory. do i need to do anything in the /usr/X11R6 directory tree to create this?

here is what i have installed with yum:
