Thanks, apt-get install devscripts took care of that. But even after I installed the .deb I got I still get the same error message whenever I try loading ivtv, it always fails to initialize the firmware. I should mention that an earlier driver (0.3.7a) used to work, but suddenly stopped working. (After I installed udev and uninstalled it and reinstalled hotplug, and after I installed xorg, I don't know if there's a connection.) I guess I should just reinstall and get it over with, though there'll be a lot of work setting everything up the way I want it. Does anyone have a guess as to why the firmware won't load?
