when you use ivtv-tune, use this:

ivtv-tune -t "europe-west" -c channel

you can also get a list of channels and their frequencies 
by using
ivtv-tune -t "europe-west" -l

this is handy for VLC, where the frequency is needed to enter in the
channel, except you exclude the decimal in that case as the units are
khz and not mhz in VLC.
