Sorry if I was a little vague, I don't fully understand what's going on 
here. By 'encode' I did mean take the composite input and turn into 
something that could be then converted to DVD.

If I use the composite output from the VHS player, I can convert it to 
(what I assume) is mpeg (cat /dev/video0 >afile.mpg). That works fine 
but I had initially tried to use the SCART -> DIN cable that came with 
the PVR250. It is my understanding that this would produce better 
quality images (and since this is a camcorder -> VHS tape, it needs all 
the help it can get).

It could be that the card doesn't have the facility to do it, but I had 
assumed I would have to configure something somewhere.

I have just noticed that the VHS player also has SVIDEO output so I 
could have a play with that.

As far as creating the "read" DVD, I am sure I can find some 
documentation on that along with 'dvdrecord'.
