mplayer needs to know how to display the video.   Either the vo  
option is getting set wrongly (command line or mplayer config file)  
or the default video out options are not working on your setup.  You  
should have the xv and x11 video out options working as a bare  
minimum.  If non of the video out options work, mplayer can't output  
video.
