Assuming Ubuntu hasn't deviated from Debian much in this regard (I doubt they have) I think what you've done ought to work. You still need to confirm that /lib/modules/2.6.18.6-blicboxivtv/build exists and points somewhere sensible. Your original posting suggests that this symlink is somehow broken.
