Assuming you were listening for sound coming directly from the  
PVR-350 (not your audio card), this means that your problems have  
nothing to do with osd_compat, so you've likely done that correct.

As others have said, this shouldn't be choppy - my dual 500mhz can  
handle this fine?

mythfrontend will give you the most information. You might want to  
run it with the -debug all option or something similar.

Question: can you run `dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16` with the  
same user account as the one that runs myth? Do you hear sound or see  
video?

BTW: The MPEG decoder and framebuffer can draw things to the screen  
simultaneously. That's the whole point of the framebuffer.
