yes, this is an important point.  It is more important to get involved
with the community so people get to know you than to create tons of
code.

We once had an Ant committer who gained the communities respect and
trust just by being involved with the user list and discussions on
future directions.  She hardly ever committed any code changes, but
was a very important asset of the committer base.
