Thx for the clarification. In fact I found it yesterday that at least the XML tag must be present for an element to be defaulted. That's not the case for attribute. That's why I got confused.

If you were expecting the validator to insert elements which were absent from the input that's not how schema works. I tried the test on that bug report and it works for me.
