After a few hours of fiddling around with things, I eventually checked out an earlier (working) version of my project and discovered that the problem had appeared with that version too.
So, I restarted netbeans and the problem disappeared. I think it may have had something to do with this bug: http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=38732 Seems like the sort of thing that appears only once in a while...
