There seems to be a SASL auth started at the very end of the logfile,
but it is cut off before we can see any answer (the final characters
are a part of the SASL DIGEST-MD5 challenge). We'd need more of the
log to understand.

On a side note, have you tried enabling PLAIN authorization in Pidgin?
