Dear JabRef users,

we have released a beta of the next version of JabRef. It is available for
download from our home page, or you can go straight to the download page:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/jabref/files/jabref/2.9%20beta/

We would appreciate interested users testing this beta and reporting any
problems that turn up. Please be advised that this is a test version, so if you
use it, make sure to keep backups of all your files (well, you should always do
that anyway...)!

Some highlights from the change log of this new version:
- Added special field functionality for ranking, marking as relevant, marking as quality
assured, and prioritizing. Can be enabled by "Entry table columns".
- Added PDF preview functionality to the preview panel. Configurable via "Entry
preview" settings.
- Added "Manage keywords" popup menu to manage common keywords of selected
entries.
- Added support for pushing citations to TeXstudio (requires TeXstudio >=2.4)
- Text-based citations can now be imported using FreeCite by Brown University
(http://freecite.library.brown.edu).
- Support for synchronization of unlinked PDFs.
- Added command line argument -d/-prdef for resetting preferences to default
values. Can reset a comma-separated list of preference values, or all values.
- Added small right-click popup menu at each tab
- A PDF can also be dropped to the preview panel to trigger linking it
- Drag'n'drop of text from the preview panel to other applications is now
working
- New context menu option "Switch preview layout" in the preview panel.
- BibTeX key generator patterns can now be stored in per database
- Braces around author names are now dropped internally. They remain in the
.bib file.
- Improvements to the autocompletion feature
- Added functionality "clean up entries"
- New "ISBN to BibTeX" fetcher. Uses the online "ISBN to BibTeX Converter"
service by Manas Tungare.
- Usability improvements of "content selectors"

Sincerely,
Morten O. Alver

Hello Morten,

Excellent changes! I've been playing with them and I have two comments.

First, the new PDF preview causes the preview panel to have a minimum height
that is rather large. This will take up most of the vertical screen space on
small screens. There is a minimum width as well, but that is less critical for
standard portrait layout papers. Can you have the PDF preview resize to fit the
preview panel and allow the panel to have arbitrary height?

Second, the options in the new Cleanup Entries dialog are difficult to
understand. On my system three of the six options had ellipses at the end
signifying missing text. Some are obvious, others like the page range option
are not. By the way, the DOI, month, and page range cleanup options are
incredibly helpful! Thanks!

Cheers,
Cody
