I’ve also learned that ver 2.10 now has the function to auto link to pdfs.
(which 2.9.2 lacked).
So I’m set up ok.

Hello Michael,
You can use grep (or sed) to modify .bib file as well - it is not the
proprietary thing specific to JabRef, but (initially) input format for BibTeX
program (just formatted text).
The specific format for file references were discussed in the list some months
ago.

Either I’m missing the detail or can’t find how I can update the file field for

Through the beauty of grep and sed I’ve taken the time to add the bibtex key to
the start of all my pdf papers. Now how do I tell jabref to update all the
entries?
It’s >5000 papers so I don’t plan on doing by hand!
