Why can't you just open the bib-file (or a copy of it) with jabref? I have just checked old bib files, large and small ones, which have never seen jabref and they all could be opened. I donot see where the problem lies? A bib file has a structure which has been defined almost 40 years ago. The programs I have used (biblio, endnote, pybliographer, zotero) could all at least write the correct bib structure.
