Sorry for late reply.
First class support for GitHub user and maintainer wise - minimum hassle 
and configuration. You can use markdown, link pull requests, issues etc, no 
need for a new user (reuse GitHub).
More important, most Java OSS projects use it (spring-boot, spring-data, 
spring-security, hibernate, reactor...).

I suggest you take 10 minutes and take a look at those projects, most also 
use gitter badge on their project etc.
