As far as I know there is no functional difference between the 4-bits and 8-bits interface. Only speed will be faster with the 8-bits interface (requires less CPU cycles). But I think the effect is marginal since it requires only a few extra cycles for 2 nibbles in stead of 1 byte, but it takes a relatively long time to process the character (in both 4-bits and 8-bits mode). The effect will be larger with a lower oscillator frequency.
