Hi guys, I was browsing around for some TCP/IP stack information, including smalltcp as William mentioned it some weeks ago. I also had a look at Microchip AN833 TCP/IP stack. It seems both requires a NIC card, like RTL8019AS (or NE2000 compatible from what I can read). Does a full *software* stack implementing PHY/MAC layers seem possible to you, or is a NIC really needed (there are Ethernet PICs too, but I'm considering pure software implementation) ? Even very slow ?
PHY being serial for instance, one could skip Ethernet protocol and use SLIP for instance. But recent discussion on jallist about RFM12B wireless module (PHY) points me to Ethernet again (assuming broadcasting and CSMA/CA is possible, correct me if I'm wrong...). Implementing some of the TCP/IP stack to build small wireless & communicative nodes (LAN) ala XBee (ok, let's name these "Jaluinode"...) could be interesting. Having Ethernet protocol, then some other higher protocols could be interesting too (that was Joep's point: it's complex but opens doors of many interesting projects). Any thoughts ?
