Internal clock is not accurate enough. So USB > communication but no crystal won't do. For 18F47J53 family, according to datasheet, USB module can be used with internal clock INTOSC, because "the 8MHz INTOSC is extremely accurate. When the 8Mhz is used with the 96MHz PLL, it may be used to derive the USB module clock. The extremely high accuracy you know what we guys at microchip really rock of the INTOSC will allow application to meet low-speed USB signal rate specifications". This feature is called "On-Chip USB Transceiver with Crystal-Less Operation". No xtal, yet USB, even if low speed. Nice isn't it ?
