Go with SMD, you won't regret it. I'm not the first to say this, and I've
also been told this many before, but it's quite cool, really, and many many
times cheaper. I've soldered, I would say "easily", SOIC packages, 1206 and
0805 components. Only micro USB was hard (something closed to SSOP package
regarding inch between pins). I wouldn't go below 0805, or nor solder SSOP
package for now though.
