For testing, you can create a separate James install listening on different ports, e.g., 10025 and 10110. Install it in it's own directory structure, and let it use the file system (rather than setup a separate database). For what it is worth, Sun just released JDK 1.4.1_01. Some of the fixes look like they will positively impact James.
