Folks,
Here's my thought on what we need to do pre & post move to jakarta.
I think moving to jakarta should increase James's exposure, which is a
good thing. But, we also need to make it v easy for new users to work
out what is happening.

Pre-move:
1) Upgrade to Avalon 3.1a1 - this is so (a) new users can find the
actual source we use, (b) we start to get the benefit of improvements in
avalon. This would not involve upgrading deprecated blocks such as the
current socket server - purely for time.
(FYI - Avalon is splitting, probably, into 3 packages: org.apache.avalon
- the design framework and utilities, org.apache.phoenix - the server
kernel based on avalon designs, and org.apache.cornerstone - commonly
required services and blocks implementing them for use in phoenix
servers. I see James using all three packages and their subpackages)

2) Make a release of James on Avalon 3.1a1

Move:
(from Jon's email)
> #1. Website needs to be updated to same look/feel as Jakarta. I suggest
> using the Jakarta-Site2 module as a dependency.

Serge has started on this

> #3. CVS tree need to be moved over to apache.org server.

This has been done.

> also needs to be updated to have the James project in the navigation and the
> rest of the pages...ie: cvs, mailing lists, etc (see the Jakarta-site2 docs
> for more information).

Post-move:
1) Upgrade James to use all the relevant features of Avalon. In
particular:
a) migrate from socketserver to connectionmanager
b) make James fully stoppable & reconfigurable on the fly,
c) revisit mail processor (per discussion of a few weeks ago)
d) allow user passwords to be reset,
e) discuss whether making mailets deployable like servlets, using the
camelot functionality, is actually useful.
2) More releases!

Thoughts & volunteers requested!

Charles
