Only 9th grade? You have a long time till graduation. Start memorizing the Kana syllabaries and buy "Japanese for busy people 1: KANA edition." isbn: 4770019874. This book is all kana. Read the book until you can read kana as fast as you can read english (without thinking about it).
You won't be able to properly pronounce the syllabaries until you hear a native speaker's pronounciation. Get the basic Pimsleur Japanese tapes for $40-50 at barnes and noble. It's worth every penny. Or if you have plenty of money, the pimsleur comprehensive series for $300. :D Then buy "japanese for everyone: a functional approach to daily communications." isbn: 0870408534 This book will start introducing you to kanji starting at chapter 1, and the pace is much faster than the "busy people" series. This is probably the most perfect and effective japanese learning book I've ever seen. Start doing the exercises in this book and you'll be well on your way. Don't waste money buying books that uses romaji, except for pronounciation purposes with kanji alongside it.
