I've tried Rosetta Stone and Instant Immersion Japanese. You should
avoid Instant Immersion, because it's full of worthless apps.
Rosetta Stone is painfully slow. It doesn't teach you any grammar at
all. The software presents you with 4 pictures and associated
japanese phrases. You have to properly select the right picture with
the right phrase, the way you'd teach a baby a new language. I found
it frustrating (and boring) since the picture isn't all that obvious
and never having heard a japanese phrase, I couldn't tell the word
boundaries in what's spoken.

Pimsleur is the only program I found good and useful.
