I don't know about mac but on windows 2000/xp you don't need any
applications. Just install the fonts and the IME available on the
windows cd.
I think everyone should post in whatever format they're comfortable
with. Accomodating for people who can't properly view japanese
characters isn't very beneficial for the group as a whole. If the
goal is to learn japanese, it might as well be the whole thing,
including kanji/kana and not half way.
The common mistake people make is to write in kanji but leaves the
default encoding to ISO-8859 in outlook express. 8859 is the standard
english character set and it destroys the Kanji. As long as the
encoding is set properly (UTF8 or Shift-JIS), there shouldn't be any
incompatibilities. Another thing people do is that they write
japanese through Yahoo's english web site. If you want to post
japanese through Yahoo's web site, you have to use their japanese
portal.
