Hello,
I'm new here. I took a job with a Japanese company with the New Year.
I decided that I'd take the opportunity to learn Japanese,
particularly the technical lingo as well.
I've been working on lessons from YesJapan.com since February, and
it's coming along well. I have a basic grammar, most of the hiragana,
and a growing vocabulary.
Once I have all the hiragana, I'm planning on subscribing to a
bilingual magazine, and begin translating articles for myself. Having
the English translation will allow me to check my work.
I'll be forced to look things up and figure things out, which will
speed up my learning katakana and kanji; as well help my retention.
While I would eventually like to own a Canon Wordtank V80, I will
begin with more modest means - books and software.
Can anyone make a recommendation for a Japanese/English (and reverse)
dictionary (including hiragana, katakana, and kanji)? Any
dictionaries on CD or DVD?
Also, I've had a lifelong interest in martial arts. I trained in
Yoshinkan Aikido in my youth, and practice Taikiken these days.
Is there a special purpose martial arts dictionary? I know the
vocabulary for martial arts is a pretty special purpose one.
Finally my ultimate goal - I figure I have about 15 or so more years
to work. I hope to be in a position to do translations by that time,
as well as perhaps put myself out as a consultant for
American/Japanese business relations.
Best Regards,
Rick Matz
