If your goal is full literacy in japanese, I suggest getting "Remembering Kanji" by James Heisig. (Kanji = chinese characters the japanese language uses in writing). The book tells you what each Kanji means and how to write and remember them. As far as learning the language, the book is pretty useless since it has no japanese grammar and it doesn't even tell you how to pronounce the Kanji (i.e. how to read them), but you'll appreciate it later on after spending countless hours in a futile attempt to memorize and recognize kanji. It gives you the solid edge that native chinese students have when they learn japanese-- i.e. they already know all the kanji and what they mean, allowing them to absorb the fundamentals of the language at a **much** faster pace.
