Demo, imadoki taihen mezurashii hôgen da sô desu. ********* Oosaka-ben is understood by many Japanese, thanks to TV comedians, of whom most were born in Oosaka. However, the standard language is much more prevalent thanks to the public school system in Japan. (The use of the Kantô dialects as the lingus franca of the Tokugawa Shôgunate was only the start, given that up until then most people spoke one form of Kansai dialect or another.) This is good for the sake of convenience; if the standard language did not exist, the unification of Japan's various regions would have been more difficult. Also, only one part of Japan would have been open to foreigners, while the others would not be as open due the language differences. - Arian I. --------------------------------- YAHOO!
