There is no L in japanese, only r. So if you ask a japanese person to pronounce
the name Lena, they will always end up saying Rena. The 'D' part of it you are
referring to isn't actually a 'd' sound per se, but a particular way of
articulating the tongue that makes it sound that way. In general, a word
beginning with R in japanese is the same, as in saying, Romaji, or Rainen...if
it is a syllable sound R then what you are hearing is ...the best way to
describe as almost a fluttering of the tongue. In both japanese, and spanish (
nearly identical pronounciation, which is very interesting) you use the tip of
the tongue a lot in saying the words and when you pronounce long words it sort
of almost like bounces between the front top of the mouth and the bottom tip of
the mouth, and that creates what you think is a d sound, but just remember its
R your hearing and should be treated as such. The whole japanese alphabet,
there is absolutely no L, so don't worry its less to worry
about.

How are you supposed to pronounce R, I read that it is usually
pronounced more like the American "L" such as in Arigatou, however,
recently I heard it is sometimes pronounced with a "D" sound, such as
in arimasu? Which is it and how do you know when to pronounce it like
an "L" and when to pronounce it like a "D"?
