Why not just write a Ping servlet? It's about as simple as a HelloWorld
servlet. For instance, I built such a ping command into my servlet that
checks that it can establish a DB connection and do all its normal startup
stuff, so if there's a problem anywhere within jserv or my servlet the ping
will fail. For a monitoring solution I use
http://uptime.arsdigita.com/uptime/ because it is free, simple, reliable,
and runs completely independently of my host.
