Guess I better take this one, since I'm kinda sorta lead on 1.1 ....

Apache JServ 1.1-DEV is available today in the CVS tree for experienced
developers to play with (the CVS tag is JSERV1_1DEV). Relative to 1.0, it is
missing the following things to make it a useful production release:

* An implementation of AJPv11 or AJPv12 so that it
  connects to Apache (right now, it includes only a small
  HTTP/1.0 adapter for stand-alone serving like JSWDK)

* Lots of testing and debugging, especially in the
  session management area.

* Installer scripts brought up to date.

* Documentation of all sorts.

* Performance tuning.

* Validation testing for conformance to the spec.

* Get the Josper JSP engine to work under it. Many
  things do work, but the remaining issues could be Apache
  JServ bugs, Josper bugs, or a combination. (Josper
  is the JSP engine from JSWDK that Sun is also
  contributing to the Jakarta project).

As you can see, there's a lot more to do. If people are willing to pitch in
and help, I would be happy to work towards an interim release of this stuff --
at least until the Tomcat code actually shows up, at which point we need to
step back and evaluate the path forward from there. If no one steps forward,
then there will probably never be a formal release of it (although the good
ideas will get merged in to Jakarta).
