Thanks to all who gave advice. After stripping down the Servlet
to a minimum things began to work ( passing the variables to the
CGIC program) and after building it up back to full
functionality everything worked.

Looking at the Frame source in the browser was the best advice.

The HTML code was somewhat weird since I had several FORMS with
SELECTS/OPTIONS in a TABLE.

Off topic question aside: Is it better to put FORMS in a TABLE or can one put
TABLES in FORMS? (for formatting/positioning of the FORMs elements like
SELECT, TEXTAREAs etc.)
