I have seen JIT cause a VM to bloat until all memory
is consumed and the JVM crashes on these platforms
with these VMs:

JVM: IBM JDK 1.1.8 Platform: Linux RH6.0
JVM: Sun JDK 1.2.1 Platform: Solaris 2.6&7 / Sparc
JVM: Sun JDK 1.1.8 Platform: Solaris 2.6&7 / Sparc

>From what I've been told by an IBM engineer, the JIT's
algorithm for deterministic garbage collection is
difficult and not implemented very well on any VM
except HotSpot.
