sorry but just the obvious:

does your ServletA call super.init() in its init method?
can you recompile ServletB as ServletA and call that from your applet?
can you replace the reference to SomeOtherServlet in an applet that works with a call 
to ServletA?
what happens when you replace ServletA with a servlet that has a real simple service() 
method i.e. just logs the call?
