Did you setup authentication for the servlet itself?  If you accessed the
servlet via an HTML
page that is authenticated, but the servlet itself is not marked as needing
authentication,
I believe you'll get the result you are seeing.  Check out:

for info on how to configure basic authentication for a servlet.

If you've already done all this, I don't know what's happening.  You may
want to check out the
"super-snoop" servlet that is described in the JServ FAQ; that will show you
more about the
environment being passed to JServ.
