Ben,
Solaris is a bit more stable and somewhat faster, but not enough to justify
the purchase of a Sparc box.
The real reason you may want to consider solaris is that it has absolutely
fantastic support for multiple processors. The performance scales almost
linearly on a multi-cpu ultrasparc box.
So, if you want the performance benefits of a multi-cpu machine, go with
solaris. Otherwise I can't see any reason to move away from linux at all.
Also keep in mind that the upcoming linux 2.4 kernel has much better support
for multiple cpus, so the point may be moot. But note that it will take
linux a while to catch up to solaris' multiprocessor prowess. Solaris has
much finer grained kernel locking and tons more experience in this arena.
Another point to consider is "enterprise level" support. If you invest in a
sufficiently expensive sparc box you will get some very fancy features
indeed. Almost all the hardware is hot-swappable - disks, memory, cpus,
network cards, power supplies et al.
Also note that you almost need to buy a sparc box to run solaris. If you are
thinking of solaris on intel - don't. It just isn't worth it. Solaris
supports only a limited amount of hardware on intel. Drivers aren't updated
frequently etc. On intel boxen, linux is king.
