You can get NetXRay for Windows. Install on one
machine, and check the packets from both the machines
that you normally use. It will give you details on
your connection. A TCP connection should look like:
SYN ->
<- SYN, ACK
-> blah
<- blah-blah
->FIN

And I stripped it A LOT. Anyway, you can check it out.
Otherwise, you may be able to do it with a regular
Linux Packet sniffer (TCPDUMP) but this may be harder
to read.

Now, from Java, that's another issue. I haven't used
the Socket class for awhile, but if that exist in
there you should be able to do a select (except), so
that you can check the connection is still OK.
