Some quick answers to your questions:

Look at the mySQL site for a JDBC driver for mySQL. There are some
available, but I am not sure how good/bad they are.

In the JServ installation directory look for a directory called 'docs'. In
there open the index.html file. This is a very good starting place for all
the documentation you need for JServ.
I don't know the answer to your third question (benchmarks comparing PHP
and Servlets).
