We are running Apache 1.3.12 on FreeBSD 4.0 using balance with no problems, with
JServ's on Linux 2.2 / Sun JDK. 

I presume you are manually starting the VM's?

Have you verified the operation of the mod_jserv shmem stuff on SunOS, it is a
rather old OS (or do you mean Solaris, which announces itself as SunOS 5.x in
uname)?
