I haven't used basic auth in a very long time so please bear with me. Does your
server send "{_}HTTP 401 Unauthorized{_}" as described here?

At a glance in RequestImpl I see no reason why it wouldn't work, though the new
thing in 1.8.0 is httpclient4 is the default and no longer commons httpclient
3.x.
