I don't see why you can't just break compatibility between versions when 
dealing with Serialization. Just have it continue to mean live (or close to 
live) persistence.

Even the JDK does this (e.g. Swing serialization makes no guarantees). Just do 
the same - bound to change between releases...

Also, different compilers will generate different SUID... usually due to 
synthetic methods. It's kind of a problem...
