There seems to be an awful lot of basic Java questions being asked on this list. My understanding is that this class is not for learning Java. More appropriate places to ask basic Java questions would be the newbie forum at www.javaranch.com or the java passion class that is for learning java (javaprogrammingwithpassion+subscr...@googlegroups.com or class forum at http://groups.google.com/group/javaprogrammingwithpassion?hl=en).
In fact you might find that the excellent people at javaranch have already answered your questions. Once on the javaranch site select "List of Forums". Then under the Java Header you'll find a Beginning Java and a General Java forum. The java programmer certification forum is also an good place to check. In addition I'd recommend the following books: "Head First Java"; "Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide" by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates.
