If might not move the counter to the first record..
'try rs.movefirst or rs.first (check the command as I don't remember that..

then use rs.getString('column name');

like ...

while (rs.next() )
{
 rs.first()//check //the command here..

 String st = rs.getString('column name');

}

and yes, check if the column type is string..

lastly, try to use session instead of request object to store variable.
