Hi,

Please forgive me I sound a little irritable. I have Fedora Core 4 for
x86_64 installed
on a new HP nx6125 laptop (Turion ML-40). I am beginning to regret
buying a 64-bit
machine, since so many things seem unsupported. My wireless card
required searching
another manufacturer's website for a Windows driver to run under
ndiswrapper, there
seems to be NO 64-bit flash plugin, and NO java plugin for firefox
(1.0.7) -
certainly not from Sun!

So, I came to blackdown and picked up the j2sdk-1.4.2-03 package for
amd64. I must
congratulate you for at least trying to support java linux users. I ran
the
self-unpacking binary, found the libjavaplugin_oji.so, and made a soft
link in the
/usr/lib/firefox-1.0.7/plugins directory. However, it crashes on many
applets.
For example, I can go to java.com, but attempting to enter "Duke's Zone"
kills
firefox. Under games/classic, AstroCrusher works, but Boulder Dash kills
firefox, ... etc.

Now, normally, when I have troubles like this, I don't whine or whinge.
I get
stuck in, recompile the source code with -g, and track down the problem.
But -
no compilable source code for the jvm or plugin.

I think Sun is going to miss out badly here. Java will wither and lose
out
to Microsoft's .NET, because at least that has a working third-party VM
(Mono).
Java may be a single platform to write to, but it must run on diverse
platforms.
I really don't understand why Sun rejects the help of thousands of
developers,
like me, who would work - for nothing - to make sure Java runs on these
platforms.
"Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow".
I don't really think Sun gets open source at all.

OK, rant over. In the meantime, how can I debug these crashes without
source?
