Fedora Core 4 is *ancient*! :) Could it be that the NFS client on it is old, and this is causing problems? I remember emails about NFS 3 vs. NFS 4 and some improvements in the latter. I don't recall the details and tend to keep my Lucene and Solr instances away from NFS mounts.
