One thing you could try is dowloading the HotSpot JVM
(http://www.javasoft.com/products/hotspot/index.html) and use the command
line option -Xincgc to enable the incremental garbage collector. This should
lead to much shorter pauses for GC, to the extent that they may not be
noticeable at all.
