As I believe I have posted on this list previously, there's an API
under development which will support this kind of thing.
Its a pluggable Image I/O Framework, and we expect to provide a number
of readers & writers for most of the image formats you list.
GIF encoding is problematic however.
There's going to be a BOF on the Image I/O API at JavaOne next month
(BOF Session 615, currently slated for 7pm Thu June 8th)
We'll be sending out an email about JavaOne sessions shortly, once
we believe the session times are final.
