Let me admit in advance that I haven't search the list archives. I devoted quite a bit of time to trying, but in the end, I couldn't figure out how to obtain a LISTSERV password, and the archive webpage was not kind enough to clue me in, other than to say that I needed one. That was a lot of fun.
On to my question. Having Java2D render high quality text is very important to me. Under JDK 1.4.2_04, I'm quite disappointed with the quality of the fonts. Some render pretty nicely, to be sure, but many turn out rather ugly when compared to Microsoft Windows XP or Macromedia Fireworks -- especially at smaller font point sizes.
I did notice, to my surprise, that turning on both ANTIALIAS and TEXT_ANTIALIAS gives better quality than just TEXT_ANTIALIAS.
Any plans to inrease the quality of anti-aliasing and making it easy to adjust character spacing? I implementing kerning myself as an experiment, and found that the results were not breathtaking. However, manually adjusting the spacing of the characters did make the output look "nice". Both Windows and Fireworks perform their own manual "auto-kerning" to achieve similiar effects.
Thanks,
Ben
