All,
I have rerun some of my Appearance tests using the new 1.2B1 - there are
clearly some major changes and bugs in handling appearances under 1.2B1.
Believe me, I don't enjoy being the bearer of bad news! It would just appear
that SUN's build validation/certification process for Java 3D is not as
rigorous as it should be.
This first set of tests checks various combinations of ColoringAttributes,
Material and TransparencyAttributes.
The main points seen to be:
- Shape3D's without ColoringAttributes/Material or vertex colors now default
to black, not white.
- ColoringAttributes never update
- Surfaces with a Material are not light (?)
- Transparency in NICEST mode doesn't appear to do anything. SCREEN_DOOR
still works as well as it ever did. (!)
It would appear that SUN rather threw out the baby with the bath water in
this release.
I have attached the 10 GIF images produced using 1.2B1. These can be
compared with their 1.1.2 counterparts (along with details of how they were
produced) at:

Daniel Selman
